Emirates International Maritime Academy (EIMA) conducted a day-long seminar to familiarise the shipping industry in the region with new rules and regulations governing the maritime industry.

"Yesterday's event was specifically held for the education and training of participants on the implications of the revised International Maritime Organsiation (IMO)'s International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping (STCW)," said Jaafar bin Sidin, Director of EIMA.

The International Convention on STCW, established by the IMO in 1978, sets qualification standards for masters, officers and watch personnel on sea-going merchant ships.

It was adopted in 1978 at a conference at the IMO in London, and came into force in 1984. The convention was significantly amended in 1995. The year 2012 will see more and new changes added to the convention.

"This amendment will have a direct bearing on ship-owners, managers and operators. It is very important that companies operating in the region keep up to date with the latest developments," said Sidin.

"EIMA is proud to be hosting this inaugural seminar together with GlobalMET. It will help create a platform that encourages development and delivery of effective maritime education and training in view of the revised STCW Convention scheduled at the end of 2012," he added.

GlobalMET, a growing network of 100 member-institutions across 34 countries promotes, develops and supports, in the spirit of co-operation, the common interests of its members in all matters concerning the development and quality of maritime education and training.
