Testimony to its growing reputation as a reliable marine training establishment in the UAE, Emirates International Maritime Academy (EIMA) has announced that it has recently concluded an STCW standard one-day fire fighting training course for the staff of the world's most prestigious floating residence, The World Cruise ship.

The World, a one-of-a-kind concept, is a ship serving as a residential community owned by its residents. The residents, from about 40 different countries, live on board as the ship slowly circumnavigates the globe — staying in most ports from two to five days. Some residents live onboard full time while others visit their floating home periodically throughout the year.

The course, conducted within the premises of EIMA in Dubai, covered various critical areas of fire fighting in the marine environment, including extinguishing different types of fire, search and rescue, familiarization with fire fighting equipments, crowed management, and the use of breathing apparatus.

Captain Jaafar Bin Sidin, Director of EIMA, said: "We are increasing our efforts in developing training activities for different types of marine craft operators in the region. These courses provide basic training as well as update and refresh the expertise, skills and knowledge in light of new developments in boating technology and know-how."

"With the massive infrastructure projects and state-of-the-art maritime facilities being developed in the UAE and across the Gulf region, it is important that we provide a parallel initiative that will enhance the practical and theoretical know-how of the entire boating community, particularly on aspects concerning safety and the environment," he added.

The UAE's National Transport Authority recently awarded full accreditation of the courses and programs being provided by EIMA, affirming the high quality of its offerings and highlighting its commitment to global standards set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). The academy conducts its specialised courses out of a facility within Dubai, with a diverse range of topics covering maritime security, safety and the environment.
