Emirates International Maritime Academy, GlobalMET conduct Middle East's first review of IMO STCW Convention.

Under the patronage of the UAE National Transport Authority, and supported by Dubai Maritime City Authority, Emirates International Maritime Academy (EIMA) has announced today that it has hosted the region's first seminar in Dubai focusing on the development and delivery of effective maritime education and training, including the implications of the revised IMO International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) Convention.

Joining EIMA in organizing this even is the well-known maritime organization "GlobalMET", a growing network of 100 member institutions in 34 countries promotes, develops and supports, in the spirit of co-operation, the common interests of its members in all matters concerning the development and quality of maritime education and training (MET).

"We are committed to providing the UAE, GCC, and the Middle East as a whole with industry leading maritime education on both theoretical and practical levels," said Jaafar bin Sidin, Director of EIMA.

"EIMA is proud to be hosting this inaugural seminar together with GlobalMET. It will help create a platform that encourages development and delivery of effective maritime education and training in view of the revised STCW Convention scheduled at the end of 2012," he added.

The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW), established by the IMO first in 1978, sets qualification standards for masters, officers and watch personnel on seagoing merchant ships. STCW was adopted in 1978 by conference at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London, and entered into force in 1984. The Convention was significantly amended in 1995. And the year 2012 will see more and new changes added to the convention.

With support from Dubai's leading maritime players - DP World and Drydocks World - the maritime expert speakers at the event addressed and discussed the new changes expected for the STCW convention and their impact on the maritime industry, with focus on ship owners, ship managers, seafarers, and regulators in the UAE, GCC, and the Middle East region.

Participants at the well attended seminar included leading maritime experts from world renowned organizations including: GlobalMET, The National Transport Authority Maritime Administration of UAE, Global Met, IFSMA, Anglo Eastern Maritime Training Centre, ADNATCO-NGSCO, Marine Business Development, Karishma Marine Solutions, and Austral Asian Maritime Education Services Ltd.
