Course Title: Maritime Resource Management

Introduction
Analysis has shown that a large number of dangerous shipboard situations arise due to poor communication or coordination, rather than technical failures or lack of skill.

The MRM course is designed to minimize the risk of incidents by encouraging safe and responsible behaviour.

This course is a further development from the original SAS Bridge Resource Management which was developed in close co-operation with eight other shipping and pilot organizations including The Swedish Club.

For Whom
MRM is ideal for seagoing deck and engineering officers, maritime pilots, ship superintendents, shipping executives, training managers and any other person who are interested in resource management.

Course Aim
The aim of this course is to foster positive attitudes favouring good personal communication, excellence in leadership skills and compliance with operating procedures.

The ultimate aim of resource management training is to ensure that available resources are used in the best possible way to accomplish tasks as safely and efficiently as possible.

Course Outlines
By the end of the MRM Course, the participants will be able to:

  • State the different attitudes and management skills that affect maritime safety.
  • Develop cultural awareness and methodology to deal with people and organizations of different culture.
  • Recognise the importance of Communications and Briefings.
  • Understand the importance of Challenge and Response to enhance safety.
  • Adopt Short Term Strategy to improve workflow and to complement SOPs.
  • Recognise the importance of maintaining a balanced Authority and Assertiveness.
  • Identify the existence of and the tactics in responding to different management styles.
  • State the range of workload and adopt measures to distribute workload effectively.
  • Understand the various States of the Ship and the need to control the ship at optimum level.
  • State the human errors leading to accidents and determine policies to reduce and learn from such errors.
  • Identify the internal and external factors affecting judgment and decision making.
  • Recognise different types of emergencies and leadership styles.
  • Develop crisis and crew management and crowd control strategies.
  • Develop awareness on the impact of automation and the strategy to deal with it.

The MRM Course includes the principles regarding BRM as outlined in Section B-VIII/2, part 3-1 of the STCW Code

Certificates:
Certificates of completion will be issued upon successful completion which is endorsed by The Swedish Club.
